Research Refinery

Services & Pricing

At The JBR Research Refinery, I help researchers turn draft manuscripts, grant proposals, and dissertations into clear, publishable scholarship. I specialize in quantitative health sciences, public health, and nursing research, with a focus on rigor, clarity, and journal-readiness.

All editing is done using Track Changes (or equivalent suggestion tools), so you maintain full control over every revision.

Core Services

Proofreading — Surface-Level Polish

Best for: Near-final manuscripts that need a last check before submission or defense.

Includes:

  • Correction of spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Minor formatting adjustments
  • Small fixes to align with journal or style guidelines
  • No structural changes or substantive rewriting

Rate: $0.025–$0.04 per word
Minimum project fee: $150

Copyediting — Scholarly Clarity & Style

Best for: Manuscripts that say the right things but don’t yet say them clearly.

Includes:

  • Sentence-level revision for clarity, cohesion, and academic tone
  • Improved flow and readability, especially in dense sections
  • Consistency in terminology, tense, and voice
  • Alignment with APA, AMA, or journal-specific guidelines
  • Citation and reference consistency checks
  • All changes made with Track Changes for your review

Rate: $0.045–$0.085 per word
(Final rate depends on writing quality, technical complexity, and timeframe.)

This is the most common service for journal submissions, grant sections, and dissertation chapters.

Developmental Editing — Structural & Conceptual Support

Best for: Early or struggling drafts, multi-author manuscripts, and projects where the argument isn’t landing yet.

Includes:

  • Reorganization of sections to strengthen logic and flow
  • Identification of gaps in rationale, argument, or signposting
  • Suggestions for improving coherence across aims, methods, results, and discussion
  • Rewriting of unclear or overloaded sentences and paragraphs (with care not to alter your intended meaning)
  • Margin comments explaining why changes are recommended

Rate:

  • $120–$225 per hour, or
  • $0.12–$0.20 per word (for project-based quotes)

Developmental editing goes beyond “fixing sentences” and focuses on how the manuscript works as a whole.

Statistical & Methodological Review (Add-On)

Best for: Quantitative research papers, grant proposals, and dissertations where statistical interpretation and methodological clarity are critical.

Includes:

  • Review of statistical reporting and interpretation (e.g., ORs, CIs, p-values)
  • Feedback on study design, modeling choices, and clarity of analytic approach
  • Suggestions for aligning language with causal inference standards
  • Support in clarifying results and limitations sections
  • Optional coaching on responses to reviewer comments

Rate: $175–$300 per hour

This service complements copyediting or developmental editing and is available for selected projects in public health, nursing, medicine, and related fields.

Section: Scope & Escalation Policy

How I Handle Manuscripts That Need More Than Copyediting

Most projects begin as copyediting. However, some manuscripts—especially early drafts or heavily revised texts—require more extensive restructuring to be effective.

If I discover that sections of your manuscript need substantial rewriting, reorganization, or interpretive clarification, I will let you know before proceeding.

Scope Escalation Policy
If portions of the manuscript require rewriting, restructuring, or interpretive clarification that goes beyond standard copyediting, I will notify you and outline options. At that point, you may:

  • Approve a shift to developmental editing at the applicable rate, or
  • Choose to revise those sections yourself, with my comments as guidance.

No additional fees are incurred without your explicit written approval.

This approach protects your time, your budget, and the integrity of your scholarship.

Section: Turnaround & Scheduling

Turnaround times depend on word count, complexity, and current availability. Typical ranges:

  • Under 4,000 words: 5–7 business days
  • 4,000–10,000 words: 7–14 business days
  • Grants and large projects: scheduled and quoted individually

Rush services may be available and are typically subject to a 35–50% rush fee, depending on the deadline.

If you have a fixed submission date, please mention this in your initial inquiry.

Section: Working Together

How to Request a Quote

To receive a tailored quote, please include:

  1. Manuscript type and discipline (e.g., R01 aims page, nursing research article, PhD dissertation chapter)
  2. Word count (excluding references, if you prefer)
  3. Target journal or format guidelines, if applicable
  4. Desired completion date
  5. Whether you are interested in copyediting only or copyediting + statistical/methodological review

Upload or email your manuscript in Word format whenever possible, so I can provide a precise estimate.

  • Invoices are issued electronically and can be paid via common online methods.
  • University purchase orders and lab/center contracts are welcome.
